Darkness Comes to the Woods
Jason Bolte Darkness Comes to the Woods (2001) for soprano, tape, and electronics
Darkness Comes to the Woods is an electroacoustic composition that integrates live acoustical performance with tape and interactive electronics.  The work is a setting of Norbert Krapf's poem “Darkness Comes to the Woods” from his book Somewhere in Southern Indiana.  The poem was chosen, in part, because of the poet's ties to where I grew up in southwestern Indiana, and the images that it brought forth upon my first reading. In the poem, Krapf uses the symbol of water to describe the darkness that is overtaking the woods. This symbol is carried into the tape part be using easily identifiable sounds such as running water and thunder.  These sounds, along with others, are used to create a dark and menacing texture, which compliments and exaggerates the text and vocal line.   “Darkness Comes to the Woods” from Somewhere in Southern Indiana, by Norbert Krapf.  Used by Permission of Time Being Books.  Copyright 1993 by Time Being Press.  All rights reserved.
